Estimator

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced, organized, career oriented, independent, and self-motivated Estimator. You will break down a project scope of work into a standard format and determine costs through quantity take offs and vendor submissions and understand schedules. You will use your strong ability to visualize and consider scopes of work that would be required to complete the project that may not necessarily be shown on preliminary or conceptual drawings. This role works very closely with sales, project management, site supervisors and finance in their preparation of cost estimates and bid proposals for presentation to senior management for approval. A very high attention to detail is important along with good time management and the ability to prioritize tasks.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Review bid documents (specifications, architectural and structural drawings, addendums, bid alternates, delivery dates if noted and bid closing dates).
  • Perform the material take-offs from the drawings.
  • Efficiently coordinate sending/receiving of estimates from vendors for materials and services.
  • Work with project managers and site supervisors to discuss project scope, to understand labour requirements and schedule.
  • Prepare the cost estimate and work with project management to obtain a preliminary schedule in a timely manner and with the understanding of meeting all bid deadlines.
  • Present, with sales, the estimated project cost and pricing to management for approval.
  • Work very closely with sales in preparation and submission of bid documents (quotation letter, pricing for bid alternates, and schedules).
  • Track cost estimates and any revisions.
  • Use Excel and other software to manage the estimation process, including keep a database of pricing for various services.
  • Assist in achieving departmental goals by meeting margin targets and deadlines for bids.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments.
  • Focus on creating a bidding system that optimizes production of accurate cost estimates.
  • Represent the department and company in a professional, positive manner when liaising with internal and external customers.
  • Deliver an amazing customer experience.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years in construction industry.
  • 5+ years in a construction estimating role with an in-depth understanding in preparing construction cost estimates.
  • Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Design, Engineering or Architecture is an asset.
  • Fluent in reading, analyzing, and interpreting structural and architectural drawings is required.
  • Extremely proficient in the use of construction software tools such as Procure, Bluebeam, MS Project, MS Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates of varying size and complexity.
  • Have strong customer focus, emotional intelligence, and ability to manage through change.
  • Ability to always conduct yourself in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Are a team player with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Work well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Exposure to the concrete sector would be an asset.
  • Experience on mid- & high-rise projects either with a construction company, developer, GC, CM, Architect or Structural Engineering firm is an asset.
  • Experience in lean processes and continuous improvement is an asset.
